Welcome!

Welcome to the Clem Insect Ecology and Biodiversity Lab website! My name is Dr. C. Scott Clem and I am an Assistant Professor of Ecology in the School of Biological Sciences at Illinois State University (Bloomington-Normal, IL). My lab, founded in fall of 2024, is broadly interested in research topics at the intersection of insect ecology, conservation, and biodiversity research. Current projects involve insect migration, pollination and biocontrol, landscape ecology, and insect pest and pollinator management (IPPM). We have a special interest in flies! Particularly, we study the ecology of hover flies (Syrphidae), which act as both pollinators and biological control agents.
My previous institutions include Auburn University (bachelor’s in zoology, master’s in entomology under David Held), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (PhD in entomology under Alex Harmon-Threatt), and the University of Georgia in Athens (USDA NIFA postdoctoral fellow under Bill Snyder, 3 years).
